Watch ‘illegal’ Mini Cooper crushed for breaking US safety laws

A classic Mini Cooper has been scrapped in dramatic fashion having failed to meet US regulations.

The car was seized as part of ‘Operation Atlantic’, a partnership between US and UK regulatory and law enforcement officials working to intercept illegal and unsafe imports.

The Mini is believed to have been manufactured in 2000, but its VIN number had been manipulated to disguise it as a 1988 car in an effort to skirt the safety and emissions standards that apply to more modern cars.

Brenda Smith, Assistant Commissioner, Office of International Trade, at US Customs and Border Protection, said: “Not only does it not meet the safety requirements we have in place today, but it is made up of pieces and parts from all over the place.”

Smith named the Mini and the Land Rover Defender as models being specifically targeted by ‘Operation Atlantic’. “They’re very attractive and valuable cars to be brought in to the US and we’re seeing a lot of problems with them,” she said.
